To determine the existence of different population units of longtail hake (Macruronus magellanicus) of the Argentine Sea, the meristic and morphometric characters of 861 specimens from two different areas were studied measuring 24 body distances with the landmark methods. Besides, the relation among weight, width and thickness of 806 pairs of sagittae otoliths as a function of length and sex of individuals was analyzed. Using the General Linear Model, the Principal Component Analysis and the Multivariate Analysis of Variance the fitted morphometric variables, the meristic characters and their relation to the Area and Sex factors were assessed. The northern sector of the Argentine continental shelf (34º S-41º S) is a highly productive area that sustains important fishery resources like Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) and is characterized by the presence of frontal zones with retention of detritus and plankton. In marine environments the bacterioplankton represents one of the main components of the trophic nets and plays a key role in biogeochemical cycles. In this ecosystem biomass and bacterioplankton distribution as well as their relation to environmental variables were analyzed. The highest chlorophyll a values, not significantly related to bacterioplankton (p > 0.05), were found in frontal and coastal areas. Assessment of abundance indexes for whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) and brazilian flathead (Percophis brasiliensis) obtained with general linear models: Monte Carlo simulation and analysis of the interactions with the “year” factor. The simple surplus production model introduced is called Local Surplus Production Model (LSPM) because its only assumption is that the mean surplus production remains constant during a short period of years previous to the date of assessment. Its application requires only a short series (3-4 years) of values of an abundance index proportional to the mean real abundance of the resource. The model parameters estimate is performed in a Bayesian context using the SIR (Sampling Importance Resampling Algorithm) algorithm. Pope's Cohorts Analysis was modified to extend its application to a wider range of natural mortality, M and fishing mortality, F rate values. The modified method maintains the simplicity of the one established by Pope and does not require to resolve any non lineal equation in each cohort reconstruction process. The relative errors obtained when estimating the number of individuals per age (maximum and mean in absolute value) showed acceptable levels within the five domains (M and F pairs of values) analyzed in this work.
